GARDOS TOWER – SYMBOL OF THE ZEMUN

In the honor of the thousandth anniversary of the settlement of Hungarians in Pannonia, the Hungarian authorities built four Millennium Towers on four sides of the world. The most southern tower still exists in Zemun, municipality of Belgrade  – Gardos.

This tower is the only monument from the period of the Hungarian monarchy located outside the Hungary. It is also the most popular and most visited tourist destination in Zemun. An incredible view of Zemun, Belgrade and the Danube river make every tourist to visit this place one more time.

The Gardos tower is located at almost the same altitude as the Kalemegdan Fortress. This tower was built in a place where once a fort, which was completely destroyed in the eighteenth century. Today, the remains of this fort can be seen in the surroundings of Gardos tower.

Interesting fact is that the Millennium Tower was used by Austro-Hungarian soldiers during the First World War, and at the end of that war the Austro-Hungarian monarchy broke down and all the four towers they built were found outside the borders of that former state.
