THE OLD PALACE – THE ASSEMBLY OF THE CITY OF BELGRADE WHICH USED TO BE A ROYAL PALACE

The seat of the Belgrade City Assembly today is located in the Old Palace, right across the street from the house of National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia. This building represents the first royal palace complex in Serbia and testifies to the past in which Serbia was the Kingdom of and the families Obrenovic and Karadjordjevic ruled.

Stojan Simic, one of the most influential people of the Principality of Serbia was the first who  bought the property on which the Old Palace is located. He drained the swamp and raised the house at that place. She was later bought for the needs of Prince Aleksandar Karadjordjevic, and the first royal palace in Belgrade was created.

In the middle of the nineteenth century around the Palace were built many buildings that no longer exist today. After the Berlin Congress in 1878 and Serbian inndependence, the construction of a royal palace complex began. From the whole plan, only the arrangement of the Old Palace was realized, while the New Palace was built for decades following the completely new project.

The Old Palace suffered great damage during the First World War, and then during the bombings in the Second World War. However, after the reconstruction and removal of the dome with royal crowns, it was converted to the hosue of Government of FNRJ and the Federal Executive Council. Since 1961, the seat of the Belgrade City Assembly has been located in it. Although so much has changed and it has completely different role in the modern state, the Old Palace remained in the same place and as the first Belgrade royal palace it reminds us of the time of the Kingdom, and therefore is a significant cultural monument.
