We begin the series with a text about the legendary hotel located at the very entrance to Zemun, on the border with the municipality of Novi Beograd. Since its inception, this hotel has hosted world-famous personalities and in its time was the center of events, one might say, even in Belgrade. It is the hotel “Yugoslavia”. It was created not so long ago in 1969 and was one of the most important buildings in this part of Belgrade. With a phenomenal view of the War Islands and the historical Kalemegdan fortress, it attracted numerous domestic and foreign visitors. It must be noted that the construction lasted almost 21 years due to the complexity of the project and the care over the smallest details. With over 1500 rooms, on seven floors, it was the largest hotel in the former SFRY, and certainly the most modern. This glamorous hotel, based on the idea of the head of state at the time, hosted the most influential people in the world from various fields. Some of them were US Presidents Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, German Chancellor Willy Brandt, then astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, actor Kevin Costner and singer Tina Turner, and even one of the world’s greatest historical figures, the Queen Elizabeth II, and many others. The hotel slowly begins to fall into oblivion due to the political situation at the beginning of the nineties, so that in the bombing of 1999 it was one of the targets in Belgrade. He stopped working after that unfortunate event, and he received his promotion only in 2013.
