“Duhovne znamenitosti Novog Sada”: Dunavska ulica

In the following series of articles, we will discover locations that Novi Sad will show you in the best light, places that you will definitely want to visit again and that you will fall in love with! This city gives each of us everything we want!

The street which, along with Zlatna greda street, is the oldest in Novi Sad, is certainly one of the busiest. Once upon a time, in the 18th century when it was built, it connected, as can be concluded from the name itself, the city and the Danube. There was an old inn called “At the English Queen’s House” from where people took carriages to their desired destination. According to traditions, military music was also played there.

As expected, it was completely destroyed by the bombing in 1849. This did not discourage the people, and with the beginning of the peace, they immediately began constructions modeled on large European palaces. At that time, it was by far the most expensive area that only big merchants could afford.

Walking down Dunavska Street today, you will notice that it is probably the most popular street, from which you can quickly reach several locations in the rest of the city, so its purpose has never changed.
