“Moje putovanje kroz Novi Beograd”: Zapadna kapija Beograda – Geneks

In the series of texts “My journey through New Belgrade” that follows, we will present you locations in New Belgrade that are of historical importance, iconic places that make this municipality the most interesting for tourists who want to visit Belgrade and Serbia. This municipality offers a number of interesting things, starting with historical buildings, nightlife throughout the week, visiting museums, religious buildings, sports events, sailing on rivers and parts that are known only to locals, and which once you visit – you will definitely want to come back. ! We start the series of texts with one of the symbols of Belgrade, the West Gate of the city, popularly known as the Genex Tower. It is a 35-story high tower that, at the time of its creation, in 1980, was an architectural marvel, and many believed that the capital city would develop based on it. It is located in Block 33, right next to the Belgrade-Zagreb highway, in Narodnih heroja Street. Once upon a time, this solitaire was the center of the business world. One of the most successful companies in Yugoslavia at the time was located at this address. This building in New Belgrade is a symbol of the famous Brutalist style, which had a rotating restaurant on top that connected two towers. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed in 1999. Once, from this elite restaurant, guests could enjoy the view of almost the entire city from a height of almost 135m, which makes this solitaire the 4th highest in Belgrade. For people who grew up in New Belgrade, Genex is a point that saw them off and welcomed them from the road, and an object that cannot go unnoticed whenever you pass this part of the city. Since 2013, after a long period, the clock on top of the solitaire has been put into operation. This symbol of the city, whose architect is Mihajlo Mitrović, is in the register of cultural assets of the state.
